Great Fen
United Kingdom 2004/2005-On
"The Great Fen Project" is one of the most ambitious habitat restoration projects ever undertaken in Britain. And the first ANF project in the UK. It will create a 3000-hectare wetland in the Fens between Huntingdon and Peterborough. The Fens were once a huge area of wetland and march, but were largely drained (using Dutch expertise) in the seventeenth century. There are very few remnants of fenland habitats in this part of England. One is the National Nature Reserve at Woolwalton Fen and the project aims to extend this to create a huge reserve that will attract long-lost species and provide a secure base for the scare species holding at Woodwalton Fen. It will also provide opportunities for leisure and tourism.
The project is a partnership between English Nature, the Wildlife Trust, Huntingdonshire District Council and the Environment Agency. The partners are consulting local people to help the vision become reality. For more information see www.greatfen.org.uk
